Heritage Auctions said the Hermes Exceptional assortment Shiny Rouge H Porosus Crocodile 30cm Birkin Bag with Solid eighteen karat White Gold & Diamond Hardware fetched the record value for a publicly auctioned purse, together with the 19.5 % buyer's premium, at the Dec. 6 auction.
"This is a unprecedented example of 1 of the world's most exceptional purses," said Matt Rubinger, director of luxury accessories at Heritage Auctions, "and this was definitely an exceptional value, exceeding our highest expectations at each corner."
"Just a year ago another Birkin, while not the jewels and in lesser condition than this one, sold for the equivalent of $77,000 at auction in England," Rubinger said. "Everything concerning this bag measures up far better than that one, that was the auction record till this: the colour, the diamonds, the condition -- it all combines to form this a singular bag and a unprecedented chance for a high-end collector."
